Edinburgh Art Festival
It might seem like an AI-generated scene from our future planet, but this aerial photograph of the Gateway pool was taken from above the Jupiter Artland in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the nearly 9-metre-diameter artwork lies. Created by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, the landscape sculpture and functioning swimming pool opened to the public as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival in 2019. The artwork—forming a water splash—is made from over 11,000 hand-painted tiles that were produced in a traditional ceramic workshop in Portugal.
Today is the first day of the Edinburgh Art Festival's 19th edition, which runs for over two weeks and ends on August 27. The UK's largest annual celebration of visual art presents a wide range of events and exhibitions, featuring emerging talents as well as established artists since 2004.
