A perfectly timed nap A perfectly timed nap
Grey seal sleeping on the beach, Orkney Islands, Scotland
National Napping Day couldn't be better timed. It falls on the Monday after Daylight Saving Time begins, when clocks move forward and we all lose an hour of sleep. Consider today an official excuse to slow down and make up for it. The sleeping grey seal in this image, spotted along Scotland's coast, is a fitting reminder for the day: rest matters.
Grey seals are surprisingly strategic sleepers. Rather than settling in for one long stretch, they nap in shorter periods that fit their environment. In the water, seals sleep lightly and briefly so they can surface to breathe. On land, especially on quiet beaches and rocky islands, they rest more deeply and for longer spans. This flexible sleep pattern helps them conserve energy while staying safe from threats.
On National Napping Day, take a cue from the seals: slow down, embrace rest and let science and nature prove that naps really are worth it.
