Königssee lake, Bavaria, Germany
When mist drifts across Königssee Lake, located in Bavaria, Germany, in the early morning, the landscape feels almost timeless. The long, narrow mountain lake lies in south-eastern Bavaria, cradled between the steep rock faces of the Berchtesgaden Alps. Large parts of the lake lie within Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany's only Alpine national park, where nature is largely allowed to develop without human interference.
Königssee was formed during the Ice Ages, and the surrounding mountain slopes give it its fjord-like character. With a depth of around 190 metres, it is one of Germany's deepest and clearest lakes. In calm weather, the smooth surface mirrors the nearby peaks, while veils of mist softly blur the contours of the scene.
Its remarkable stillness is no coincidence. Since 1909, only electric boats have been permitted on the lake—a deliberate measure that protects water quality and safeguards wildlife. One glance across the mist-covered Königssee reveals why it is considered one of the country's most striking and tranquil natural landscapes.
